OC test 2026 and 2027 dates: confirmed vs what's expected

Which "OC test" do you mean?

"OC test 2026" and "OC test 2027" turn up two answers a full year apart, and search results mix them together — because the test is sat the year before entry.

Year 5 entry in 2027 is the cycle that just finished. Its test was sat on 8–9 May 2026 — so if you searched "oc test 2026" hoping for this year's dates, you were in the right place: the test itself happened in 2026, in Year 4, for a class place starting the following year, with results due in Term 3 2026.

The test sitting in 2027 is a different cycle: it's for Year 5 entry in 2028, sat by children in Year 3 now. That's the cycle nobody has confirmed dates for yet, and the one most of this page's estimates are built around. What happens at each stage

Applications (November to February). You apply once, online, through the Department's application dashboard — the same login covers both OC and Selective if you're applying for a sibling in a different year. There's no local intake area for an OC class: any NSW public or private primary school student can apply, and a place is decided on test performance alone, not on how close you live to the host school.

Test day (a Friday or Saturday in May). The Opportunity Class Placement Test is computer-based, sat at a test centre — mostly a local high school — in three multiple-choice sections with no writing task: Reading (14 questions, 40 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (30 questions, 30 minutes). Your child sits it on one allocated day. The make-up test, 22 May 2026 for this cycle, exists only for families whose illness or misadventure request was approved in advance — it isn't a second attempt you can opt into.

Results (Term 3). The outcome arrives in the dashboard, not as a raw score — the Department reports performance in four bands and states that "test scores or placement ranks are not available and cannot be provided." Equal places for girls and boys, from 2027 entry

From the 2027-entry cohort onward — the children who sat the test in May 2026 — the Department guarantees an equal number of places for girls and boys in every opportunity class, alongside the same change at selective high schools. The change responds to a widening gap: opportunity classes sat at roughly 60 per cent boys to 40 per cent girls by 2025. Selection still runs entirely on placement-test performance within each gender pool — the guarantee changes how offers are balanced once results are in, not the test itself or how it's marked (NSW Government, "Applications to open for 2027 selective school entry, with a healthy gender balance introduced", accessed 27 July 2026).

When to start practising

The November to February application window is when most families begin practising in earnest: the application is in, the test is still three months out, and the summer holidays fall in the middle of that window as a natural block for a spare hour a day. There's no need to start a year out — the Department itself says coaching "is not necessary" and points to no credible research that it helps a child gain a place.
