OC practice tests and past papers — every free source, reviewed.
There is no such thing as a real NSW OC past paper either — the Department of Education has never released an actual exam from a real OC sitting. What it publishes is 3 sample papers (paper-based, older format, no Writing since OC doesn't test it) and a free online practice sampler on the same Janison platform used in the real test — 3 subjects, 3 numbered attempts each, 9 attempts in total. The sample papers are useful for content; only the online sampler shows you the screen you'll actually sit in front of.
Why there's no real past paper for OC either
The Department's own opportunity class practice tests page (updated 29 April 2026) uses the identical wording it uses for the Selective Test: "The PDF practice tests below are from older paper-based versions of the test. So they do not reflect the current test format." It goes on: "All tests are now completed on computers. To experience the current test format, go to the online computer-based practice tests." That's the Department telling you, in writing, that its own free OC PDFs are out of date on format — same as the Selective side.
The reason there's nothing more recent in PDF form is the same reason, too: OC placement tests are computer-based, run at NSW test centres, part of the same shift covered by the Department's Independent Review of the 2025 Opportunity Class and Selective High School Placement Testing. The Department doesn't publish the live OC item bank afterwards either (per its Get ready for the Opportunity Class Placement Test page, last modified 3 December 2025). So "OC past paper" searches turn up either the same 3 official PDFs, repackaged, or a free online sampler that's genuinely current in format but limited in scope.
Every free source, compared
I read through every official OC PDF sample and checked every subject on the Department's online sampler while building this site. Here's what each one actually gives you.

What sitting them actually feels like
The PDFs read the same way the Selective sample papers do — dense question booklets, a separate answer sheet, no interactivity, no on-screen prompts. Useful for the content, but you will not learn how to pace a 40-minute section from a printed page.
The online sampler is the same Janison player we've verified on the Selective side, just pointed at the OC item bank: pick a subject from the OC practice menu, run the countdown timer in the corner of the screen, flag any question you want to revisit, and check your progress at a glance on the progress grid before you submit. Finish a test and it shows you immediately which multiple-choice answers were right or wrong, letting you click back into anything you missed to see the correct answer. What it doesn't do is walk you through why an answer is correct — you get the verdict, not the reasoning. Each of the three OC subjects gets 3 separate numbered attempts, so there's more material here than the one-shot PDFs, but it is still a fixed, finite bank: nine attempts and you have seen everything the Department offers online.
The OC format, confirmed
Straight from the Department's Get ready for the Opportunity Class Placement Test page (last modified 3 December 2025):
- Reading — 14 questions (3 with multiple parts, 33 answers total), 40 minutes.
- Mathematical Reasoning — 35 questions, 40 minutes, 5 options per question, no calculator or ruler allowed.
- Thinking Skills — 30 questions, 30 minutes, 4 options per question.
- No Writing test — unlike the Selective Test, OC is 3 sections, all multiple-choice.
- Computer-based, at a NSW test centre, one section after another.
Where our papers stand today
Three PDF sittings and nine online attempts is the entire free OC supply the Department provides — smaller than it sounds once a child works through it over a weekend or two. We'll be upfront about where we stand: our papers at selectivepapersnsw.com/papers are calibrated to the Selective Test today, not OC. Our Mathematical Reasoning paper happens to match the OC spec on paper — 35 questions, 40 minutes, 5 options — but our Thinking Skills paper currently runs the Selective spec (40 questions, 40 minutes) rather than OC's shorter 30 questions in 30 minutes, and we don't yet sell a Reading paper at all, which OC tests and Selective doesn't. OC-calibrated papers are in development. When they land, they'll use the same online test player already built for our Selective papers — countdown timer, flag-and-review navigation, progress grid — because it's the same Janison-style experience OC students sit in front of. We're not claiming any of this improves a child's chances of a placement — the Department is explicit that there's no credible research showing coaching helps a child gain entry, for OC or Selective, and we're not going to argue with that.
